Stand and sing of Zambia

Zambia? Where is it? Oh, I didn’t know that such a country exists…

It is not so rare reaction for mentioning Zambia in a conversation. Whereas it is definitely worth taking a closer look!

Small African country…

Zambia is a large country covering an area of  752,618 km². That’s about as much as Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic – taken together. The number of people that live there is 16.5 million – less than half of the Polish population. Former Northern Rhodesia is located in the southern hemisphere, in south-central Africa. It lies on the same meridian as us, which means that in Linda it is exactly the same time as in Łódź.

The capital and the biggest city of Zambia is Lusaka, where live more than 1.7 million people. About 20 kilometers south lies the village of Linda, where a big part of our history takes place. There you can ask anybody about lyrics after “Stand and sing of Zambia” – it is an official anthem of the country.

A thundering gem

Zambia is proud of several dozen national parks and wildlife reserves that occupy up to 30% of its area. Doesn’t it sound like a perfect place for a safari? Traveling deeper into non-commercialised and less urbanized regions in the north, you can find over a dozen noteworthy waterfalls. Everything, however, outshines the African gem on the southern border of Zambia: Victoria Falls.

“Mosi-oa-Tunya” how is it called in the Lozi language means “the smoke, that thunder” and perfectly captures the impression of the largest waterfall in the world. This can’t be missed when you are in this part of Africa!

What is next door?

Admiring the waterfalls is a perfect occasion to cross the mighty Zambezi River and visit Zimbabwe, where you can take a look at the other side of the canyon with falling water. If you are still hungry for more, two countries are linked by The Bridge of Friendship. From there you can bungee jump into the 111-meter abyss, with one of the most beautiful views of the world in front of your eyes.

In the south of Zambia, we are just a step away from Botswana, which has the largest population of elephants in the whole of Africa – close to 200 000 individuals!

Traveling clockwise, we can visit other Zambian neighbors. Namibia, one of the biggest African countries, offers an amazing variety of landscapes, from the Atlantic coast, through desert dunes, to green hills.

Further north from Namibia, we can find Angola, which sophisticated capital, Luanda is called “African Paris”. Upward lies the Democratic Republic of Congo, with one of the largest mineral sources in the world.

Tanzania hides two (literally!) great treasures: reaching 5 kilometers into the sky mount Kilimanjaro and part of the largest tropical lake in the world, which is Lake Victoria. Well, Queen’s people used to have a lot of interests in this part of the continent.

Turning to the south, we will find little compared to its neighbors Malawi, with Lake Malawi – ideal for diving, sailing and resting on the beach. Last but not least – Mozambique, which has 2500 kilometers coast along the Indian Ocean and delighting coral islands.

Not only nature!

All of the above is only the tiny piece of what you can see in this part of Africa. And what about people, their mesmerizing culture, music, cuisine? You can get more insight into this part by following the events on Linda on our blog. Or better – check it yourself!
